19 May 2011 Explication of Theodore Roethkes Root Cellar A popular theme of a variety of art and media, tonus and death argon often focused on individually. In the numbers Root Cellar, Theodore Roethke creates a vivid depiction of living fighting for survival. To give a sense of the struggle intention is facing, the poet uses a vocabulary that conveys a sense of unease and degradation. possibly drawing on his upbringing, Roethke shows a contrast of existence amidst background signal of downtrodden root system cellar in the throes of decay, giving readers an insight into the internal big businessman of deportments resilient capabilities. The verse form opens with heavy imagination to show the difficulty that one would promise life to deliver surviving in a root cellar. In the starting signal line of the poem, Roethke states that nonhing would pause in that cellar, dank as a ditch. This starts the reader off with the supposition that the cellar is no t a friendly place; goose egg would even sleep there, how could anything live in such a place? Roethke shows the cellar as a wet place, tip the reader of the poem to envision a damp surroundings in the dark. He goes on to use the imagery of bulbs skint out of boxes (2) and cracks to allude that this place is not in the stovepipe condition it has constantly been in, and is headed in the opposite direction.

Continuing with the unsettling imagery, Roethke describes shoots that are dangled and drooped/lolling ob eyeshotly from mildewed crates (3 4). done these lines he first creates the contrast of life a gainst a scene of depravity. He then bring! s this contrast to the top dog and grabs the readers attention, painting the shoots as if they are capacious yellow vileness necks, like tropic snakes (5). By doing so, Roethke readily changes the vision of a dank cellar to that of one with a more topical theme. The monochrome imagery of brown scandal and roots stimulates a splash of yellow and other tropical colors, inspiring signs of life among the previously barren scene.
